The Blank Canvas of Fashion

The Blank Canvas of Fashion by Ingrid Mida 2012

My source of inspiration for this photo was last month's cover of Fashion Magazine which depicted a man dressed as a beautiful woman - although you won't know this unless you read the credits. This man, Andrej Pejic, is fashion's hottest supermodel. He has been on the cover of numerous fashion magazines and also walked the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier and Marc Jacobs - dressed as a woman. With long blonde hair, perfect skin, soft features and a tall angular body, Pejic can present himself as either a man or woman. He is a blank canvas - a fashion clothes hanger transformed by clothing and makeup - and hence the inspiration for this photo.

Hmm, that really made me think: You've put an interesting angle on it. However, if HE fits very nicely into the clothes which have been designed for WOMEN, then it becomes worryingly obvious how far removed the fashion industry really is from designing clothes for actual women. Are we really expected to look like boys (flat-chested, no curves) in order to look good in high fashion outfits?! Makes me think... Wishing you a good week ahead xo

I had seen him before....brings back memories of my makeup artist days...Halloween and my Gay friends...just guess what their favourite costumes were...I was very busy and challenged trying to make their dream come true!

I hope he shaves twice in the AM, and that the fashion shoots don't take too long. Re-applying a face after having to wash it off to shave yet again would be a pain...

Have a wonderful week Ingrid! Summer is around the corner...

I have seen him before and been amazed at his ability to chameleon like that. I find it interesting from the comments above about (a) how accepted it is that women come in all shapes and sizes and yet men are seen as a generic... and to go outside the generic is perceived as 'unusual' when they have just as many differences. Also, (b) how it raises the issue of body hair and gender generalizations again.
I'm not criticizing - there is definitely a 'norm' but the whole idea of models is that they are a blank canvas upon which designs can be showcased (ie. it's not about them, it's about the clothes).
Anyway, I do love your realization of 'The Blank Canvas', Ingrid - just fabulous :)
