La Petite Robe Noire

I have had a long fascination with la petite robe noire (the little black dress). In fact, my very first fashion illustration from age 12 was of a little black dress.

"You can wear black at any hour of day or night, at any age and for any occasion. A little black dress is the most essential thing in any woman's wardrobe. I could write a book about black."
Christian Dior

"Black is both material and colour, shadow and light. It is neither happy nor sad, but bearing and elegance. Perfect and inescapable, it is as irrestable as night."
Christian Lacroix

"You should wear a black dress at all ages. When the little black dress is right, there is nothing else."
Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor

I wrote down the above quotes on the exhibition pamphlet from a 2004 display of little black dresses in Toronto. La Petite Robe Noire presented 54 little black dresses from Didier Ludot's private collection of vintage couture and included labels such as Chanel, Lucien Lelong, Balenciaga, Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, Azzadine Alaia, John Galliano and others.

Of course, when I was in Paris in May, I had to visit Didier Ludot's vintage shops at the Palais Royale. Didier Ludot has an extensive collection of vintage couture, not all of which is black!

As well, he has a storage facility packed with the most beautiful gowns, some of which he has made available to museums for display. I was quite taken with this lovely pink gown by Dior.

I have many little black dresses in my closet but one of my favourites is this one from Didier Ludot's private label. It was a prototype dress (made as a sample for production) and was a little too big when I wore it for a dinner in Paris. I basted the side seems on the top and used a ribbon from a Dior gift bag for my belt! (Notice my "purse" on the stool nearby which is actually my toiletry bag!)

If you cannot make it to Paris to visit Didier Ludot's shops at the Palais Royale, you might want to pick up a copy of his Assouline book "The Little Black Dress, Vintage Treasure" (New York, 2001).

I so love this post! I was at there at the Palis Royal and took a picture of a Christian Dior window that I treasure. I use it on my website on my shop page before entering my floors~ There is no where like that walk and seeing some of our past and the beauty of the work of Parisian designers. Thank you for the revisit and sharing your photos~

you fit into a prototype dress? I'm not wearing black right now - I'm wearing green! Lovely piece. My favorite is a black wool worsted dress I saw in Vogue about five years ago - short sleeves, ribbon belt. I missed the chance to buy the real thing, and have been purchasing imitations of it since... maybe someday I'll find it on a vintage rack somewhere!

To live a life in dresses! I did one summer. And my grandmother wore dresses her entire life, until the 70's. (She was French.)I love yours. I wish I could wear a dress with a waist - low waisted is most flattering for me...which is okay because I adore the twenties. But I love a waist and a big sash. Ahhhh.

Lovely post, and lovely dress--on you!

Sadly, I can't really wear black very well. But on the other hand, there's nowhere in my current life to wear anything approaching a LBD even if I could. So, when I go to Paris I'll address that issue.

Several years ago I read some biographies of ballet dancers, and can't remember who it was, but someone famous--maybe even Pavlova--was said to have a closet full of nothing but 12 or 15 black dresses which she wore exclusively. What and easy and perfect way to dress.

(Again, not if you live in small town Montana.)

Ingrid you look so beautiful!! I love all the blog and your creative work. Now I'm finishing my final research about "Women in clothe's men" ( in special the smoking,in second place the equestrian clothes ). But now I'm fascinated for Marie Antoinette's life and of course the clothes we love. Actually I'm working with felt,it's nice and eco-friendly too.
Best regards
