Fragments are incomplete, unfinished, and/or broken off bits. It feels like my project is in fragments. I have bits of theory, pieces of artifacts, incomplete records, unfinished thoughts, incomplete process. I am trying to make sense of it all and it often feels overwhelming and chaotic.

After studying a book called "Art Work: Seeing Inside the Creative Process" by Ivan Vartanian, I felt inspired by the range of media that writers, designers, choreographers, sculptors and other artists have explored in their creative process. Some ideas that resonated with me included the Post-it note method of Will Self and the calendar method of Tadanori Yokoo. I loved the not-so-precious nature of these methods, which gives me a free pass to be less than perfect, and record those ideas and images that surface but might not be fully formed to share in a public forum. I bought a cheap student diary (but not the MOMA Yokoo diary) and spent several hours this afternoon cutting and pasting images to bring me up to date. It was such fun that it hardly seemed like work.
Tadanori Yokoo's once said "If an artwork is an artist's garden, the notebook is a miniature garden."
Let my garden grow.
