Antique Doll on a Stand

Yesterday while poking around a vintage shop on Queen Street, I came across this antique doll on a stand. Unfortunately, the owner of the store could not tell me anything about its history. The doll is about 2 feet tall and has a beautifully painted face and articulated joints in the arms.

Has anyone ever seen something like this? I'd love to research the doll but don't even know where to begin. Help!

She's beautiful, Ingrid. What an amazing face. Have you ever checked out Du Buh Du Designs? Here's the link:

I have her listed in my blogs list. This woman makes the most amazing dolls, very similar to your doll. You absolutely MUST check her out. She's an incredible artist and her dolls are gorgeous! She may know something about your doll :)
Have a Happy Day!

That's gorgeous. At first I wondered if it was a pincushion, but probably not if it's 2 feet tall. Beautiful. Good luck in your research.

I've never seen anything like it.

I love that the wrists are articulated - it really adds to the emotions displayed!

Any chance that it was created as a store display of some kind, and that the "skirt" area was filled with some kind of merchandise?

Great find!

Ingrid -
I just adore these dolls!
They are antique Santos Cage Dolls.
They were used in churches and processions and would have been elaborately dressed. It was also traditional for them to have a golden metal crown. Both the crowns and the dolls are very collectible. Kelly Kleins' mother is an antique dealer, here in Santa Fe ,who specializes in these.

Wow...what a fantastic find! I've been looking for a Santos Cage doll for several years. Have bid on several on Ebay, however sadly, they go too high for my PP account.

Hmmmm, I haven't visited the Queen Street shops for awhile - next time I'm in T.O. I'll definitely check them out.

Really, really cool!

I have seen many of these in Mexico.
What a superb example this is.

I believe it is a santos doll (saint doll) The open skirt was used to put the items that you are thankful for or worried about for prayer. It is a kind of a shrine once it is filled.
I have always wanted one of these! YOu are a lucky girl!

She is wonderful and looks like an artist's model from the waist up. I have never ever seen one like her and I am sure you are very lucky to find her. What a treasure, xv.

I saw dolls like that in downtown Chester Connecticut last year, same size, articulated hands. The prices were $200. The owner of the store told me that someone from New York State makes them. She also had in exhibit a single arm, 2 foot long, articulated elbow, wrist and fingers.
